    Lean(ne) Wall, Amed
Michael McFadyen's Scuba Diving - Leanne Wall, Indonesia

In May 2024 I spent a bit over two weeks diving in Tulamben before moving south to Amed for another week's diving. Both these places are on the north-eastern coast of Bali. While at Tulamben you virtually only do shore dives, most of the dives at Amed are boat dives. Some of these were back up towards Tulamben and some were even to the wreck of the USAT Liberty (which we declined to go on).

The main Amed dive sites are very close to the town and its nearby villages, just off the shore in reality. I stayed at the Hotel Uyah and used their associated dive shop Amed Dive Center which is on the premises.

Lean (or perhaps Leanne) Wall is a dive site that is about 6 kilometres east-south-east from the hotel. An approximate GPS mark for this dive is 8°21'13.212"S 115°41'19.410"E (using WGS84 as the datum).

This is one of the furthest dives we did from the hotel, certainly the longest distance to the east. e run there and back is only a few minutes. It took about 20 mins to get there by boat, but to be honest, the boat needed its bottom scraped of barnacles and weed, so it should have been under 15 minutes.

We tied up to a mooring just off Bintang (Bhima) Beach in about 2 metres of water. Once we descended, we headed north for a bit to the slope and then south along the sloping gully till the bottom turned to the north again. This became the wall. It was a steep slope at first and then a shear wall down to perhaps 35 to 40 metres.

This dive was very cold in spots, only 25C!! No idea why. Mostly it was 27C deeper and 29C shallow. No current except for the cold water which really only lasted seconds, so it was probably an upwellling.

The wall has lots of barrel sponges and small bright yellow gorgonias. There are a few bigger ones too. Some coral pieces here and there. We saw two titan triggerfish here but they did not cause trouble, unlike some other dives on this trip. There were lots of fish around, including some garden eels early in the dive.

There were a few moray eels and but only three nudibranchs. A nice dive despite the lack of macro. Visibility very good, saw 20 metres.

Sorry, no underwater photos as camera problems.
